I have been recently confronted with the painful observation that my life peripheral is constantly ignored. By this I mean I become captivated by the action my intention is connected to that I have no awareness of the ripples my doings trigger.
This is a painful pill to choke down when you live in a way that you strive to be the best person you can be, and then to hear that even in your perceived good doings you actually are kind of an asshole...an oblivious one at that.
The Way of the Peaceful Warrior is a fantastic book and in the book the mentor of the protagonist asks him,
“Are you paying attention to what's going on?”
“What?!” he protests… “There's nothing going on!”
The mentor wisely proclaims, “There's never NOTHING going on!”
It's such a true statement in our constantly barraged and flooded society. Being overtaken constantly is something we all will struggle with.
TACFIT is literally based on complete attention. To the workout, the form, the pace, the rep range and strategy, your breathing, your heart rate, and your own subjective rating of technique-effort-and discomfort. Thats one part of why I love what I do so of course when I see myself not carrying over these lessons into my own life the insult to my own injury is vast and hard to let go of I assure you.
I struggle on being a coach who distills out of people the will to forge themselves to be at their best...or rather strive for their best; and then being someone who cannot do that for themselves. I am sure this is common for most coaches, but it still is a personal standard that I embody anything I teach.
Every day every battle.
Learn how your actions affected others and try to figure out how that could have originally been avoided. Then if amends can be made then make them. Also embrace that amends doesn't mean things are pretty after still so be prepared for that.
But keep your focus on your progress and its’ process. In doing this even in the event your amends do not go over well you can take solace in its one more lesson learned and one more hard thing done.
Kill the ego...embrace the suck...power through better than you were before.
Be your own warrior and fight for your full attention to each moment. Full of intention and realizing all that is actually going on.
You will be amazed at what you can when you are in the here and now...and how well you can do it.
